GU ACTION PALESTINE We are part of the Glasgow branch of a nationwide
student activist organisation called Action Palestine – www.actionpalestine.org We are an activist group based at Glasgow University dedicated to highlighting the plight of the Palestinian people and the horrific crimes of the ongoing, 60 year long Israeli occupation of Palestine. We aim to do this by raising awareness of the situation
in Palestine, through engaging in direct actions both on and off campus and
by creating grassroots links with the people of Palestine. Although we are a non-political party affiliated group
we are more than willing to work with anyone wanting to further the
Palestinian cause, regardless of political inclination. So if you are serious about making a difference, then join us, GU Action Palestine. Glasgow University Occupied by Students Glasgow
University Occupied!
Today at 2pm this afternoon (9th of
February), around 50 students occupied the entire top floor of the Computers
Science Building of Glasgow University, in solidarity with the besieged
people of Gaza, and in protest against Israeli war crimes. Some of the issues
that the students are protesting are the University’s complicity in war
crimes via links to the arms trade, and the BBC’s refusal to broadcast the
DEC appeal.more Glasgow University students have entered
into an occupation and have a facebook
group and blog for keeping track of events. Glasgow
University Students List of Demands About us GU-Action Palestine is a Glasgow University student body, dedicated
to defending Palestinian rights on campus. GU-Action Palestine is non-party
affiliated organization established in Janiary 2009. GU-Action Palestine is
concerned with building a strong movement on the GU-Action Palestine will work closely with other Palestine societies and numerous numbers of like minded individuals on UK campuses. Our work often takes the shape of building and/or facilitating national campaigns like the Anti-apartheid week- the biggest Anti-Apartheid campus protest since the fall of Apartheid South Africa that took place in Feb €™08, and we also launched and took a leading role in the €œTrapped in Gaza€, the campaign for Palestinians locked in Gaza due to the Israeli blockade. GU-Action Palestine is a student organization and therefore seeks to raise awareness of the plight of students in Palestine. The brutal Israeli Occupation has consistently denied the Right to Education for Palestinians a right that is enshrined in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Its attacks on schools and Universities, the restrictions on movement and the general economic and social oppression of Palestinians are part of a frontal assault on basic rights in Palestine, especially the Right to Education. We believe that the struggle for the Right to Education in
Palestine is a crucial campaign that can highlight both the oppression
suffered by Palestinians as well as the reasons for that oppression. A
campaign to twin a British Students Union with a Palestinian one, like the
recent campaigns at the LSE, University of Manchester, Leeds and many others
raise many issues about the Occupation, while at the same time extending
much-needed solidarity. It is through campaigns like this that we can
challenge the pro-Israeli propaganda both in Britain and in Palestine 22 January 2009:
ISM London & Scotland issues declaration supporting student occupations
ISM London and Scotland offers support
and solidarity to the numerous student occupations and sit-ins around the UK
in recent weeks. This response to the most recent Israeli onslaught on Gaza
has been one of the most important initiatives in the movement. Generating
pressure on our higher education establishments to take a stand against
Israel and the war crimes it commits is vital. We stand in solidarity with
the many Palestinians, students, activists, academics and members of the
public who are now being more and more vocal about the boycott of Israel
as a means of both exerting international pressure on the Israeli apartheid
system, and standing in solidarity with the resistant Palestinian people. ISM activists all around the UK are
available to speak about their experiences on the ground in Palestine and are
contactable via ISM Scotland (info@ism-scotland.org).
An ISM speaker will be at the Warwick sit-in For those interested in visiting
Palestine, we can also organise training events
around the UK if you can organise a group large enough (usually 10 or 15).
